The Passing of Ma Devi
Our beloved spiritual teacher, Ma Devi (Theresa King), left her body August 4, 2023. She was a light to students across the U.S. and around the world.
Ma Devi was a life-long student of spirituality. She was a vowed religious for ten years; studied Christian theology in the States, Netherlands, India, and Nepal. She studied Zen, Hinduism, Yoga, Shintoism, and other spiritual traditions of the world. She was chosen as personal assistant to the Himalayan yogi and saint, Sri Swami Rama, living and working with him for twenty-four years in the United States, India, Japan, and Nepal. She was personally trained in hatha yoga and yoga spirituality by the saint and led by him to study with several yoga adepts in India and the United States.

Devi helped Swami Rama establish the Himalayan Institute Press in 1972 and worked as its designer, typesetter, and director for over ten years, editing the many spiritual books, articles, newspapers, and journals of the saint and the growing faculty. At his insistence, she also began Yes International Publishers in 1986.
​
Devi is author of the award-winning The Spiral Path: Essays and Interviews on Women’s Spirituality and The Divine Mosaic: Women’s Images of the Sacred Other. She had poetry published in Jennings: Britain’s Literary Magazine, was awarded commemoration and public readings of her poetry by the American Association of University Women and was a frequent writer for the Himalayan Path Journal. Her poetry book, Child of Dawn Mother of Twilight, was given an award in 2021.

Swami Jaidev Bharati
Our beloved spiritual teacher, Swami Jaidev Bharati, left his body on June 19, 2021.

This is a great loss for all of us and he has touched many people all over the world.

The Institute of the Himalayan Tradition® was inaugurated as a spiritual teaching center by the saint His Holiness Swami Rama of the Himalayas. One of the rare yoga masters of the world, he was born in the Garhwal Himalayas, raised by the yogic master, Bengali Baba, and trained in the 5000-year-old Himalayan Yoga Tradition, the oldest, non-broken tradition of spirituality in the world. Sent to the West to teach in 1969, Swami Rama demonstrated the scientific basis of yoga’s wisdom and body-mind control at the Menninger Foundation and many universities.

Swami Jaidev and Ma Devi, long-time disciples and close companions of Sri Swami Rama, founded IHT St. Paul and served as spiritual directors.
